My good friend mary-jane== Made up on the spot totally unreehearsed only played in the studio on one track – band backing riff. second track – harmonica played by Ray himself. How do I know? Bass player, me, John Hendrix, made-up the riff to get balance in studio. Was a joke at the time!!
Hi John,
Thanks for that. I passed on your story of the track to my listeners. I got the track from a new 3-CD box set called “Looking Back – 80 Mod, Freakbeat & Swinging Nuggets” released by RPM records The booklet features a picture of the album too.
The information below the track asks “I wonder who Mary Jane was?”
Cheers
Paul
Nice to know someone out ther in the ether is listening to the old stuff. The rest of the album “Ray Hoff & the Offbeats” has held up well for the times, and the quality of recording. It was all a bit hit and miss. We were trying to get the feeling of a small rocking night club. This was done in late 65 to mid 66. We hadn’t heard of Mussell Shoals or Stax in those days. Hope you can get a listen to”Mercy Mercy” & “lookin for my Pigs” . “Mary Jane” slang for the dreaded killer weed, or Bob Marley tobacco. Thanks heaps for playing it. Makes you feel like you did something. All the best to you & your listeners. John Hendrix (yes it is my name).
